Scraping away myths helps avoid both too much hype and undue paranoia about the technology. In that spirit, here are some of the most commonly spread misconceptions about
    AI tools, and the actual facts of the matter. AI thinks like a human

    A widespread myth is that because AI tools can generate eloquent prose or answer complex queries, they must be thinking and understanding the world
    much like humans do. This anthropomorphism comes easy when a machine starts
    to sound articulate. But advanced large language models do not think or possess an inner life like a human.

    Humans play a pivotal role at every stage of an AI systems lifecycle. Even after deployment, AI systems benefit from ongoing human oversight. Human involvement is not a temporary training step but a perpetual requirement to ensure systems behave as intended. AI systems operate best when paired with human judgment, a pattern sometimes referred to as humanintheloop. Accepting that AI depends on continuous human involvement keeps expectations grounded, rather than assuming constant spontaneous evolution by a favorite AI chatbot. AI is on the brink of surpassing human intelligence

    Tech enthusiasts and dystopian novelists alike enjoy the idea of AI achieving superintelligence, surpassing human cognitive skills across all domains. The reality is far more modest. The most advanced generative AI models are still essentially complex autocomplete aides. AI tools struggle with tasks that humans find trivial, like grasping context and how different kinds of information relate. Not to mention basic common sense and an intuitive grasp of real-world physics.

    Claims about imminent artificial general intelligence (AGI) often conflate performance on specific benchmarks with broadscale cognition. The myth persists in part because entertaining visions of superintelligent machines make for compelling storytelling, but confusing science fiction with current science distracts from the practical challenges and limitations of real AI. Understanding those boundaries is essential for both users and policymakers
