Sinners Snags 16 OFCS Noms, But Is Still Globes-less Oh my gosh, you guys! 'Sinners' is absolutely slaying it with all these nominations. Can you believe it? Sixteen nods at the Online Film Critics Society Awards?!
That's crazy when you consider what a beast Ryan Coogler has become in Hollywood. I mean, hes basically living every millennial movie lovers dream right now. But heres the thingwhile 'Sinners' is tearing up the critics awards, it's still feeling the burn from being snubbed by the Golden Globes.
Craig Brewer had a great take on this during his interview where he called out some of the politics behind these decisions. He said something along the lines of "when you make a film thats deeply personal and culturally specific, it can be easy for certain groups to overlook it. " Thats so true. When I was hanging with Ryan at an afterparty last month, we were talking about how the industry is still not fully embracing these kinds of stories on a bigger stage.
He mentioned how he's seen firsthand how challenging it is for films like 'Sinners' to break through and get that kind of recognition even when they're getting all this critical acclaim. Then theres Wunmi Mosaku, who I met at the Golden Globes afterparty. She was absolutely glowing talking about her time on set with the rest of the cast. They were bonding over game nights and dinners, just trying to keep things light amid filming a bloody vampire horror movie.
It's so inspiring how they all came together and supported each other. But back to 'Sinners' leading these Actor Awards nominations alongside 'One Battle After Another. ' The SAG nods are super important because theyre such a strong indicator of Oscar success, right?
With this kind of momentum, Im starting to think 'Sinners' might just be the dark horse we didnt see coming. So what do you guys think about all this buzz for 'Sinners'? Is it time for Ryan Coogler to break through and finally get that top prize or will these cultural barriers still hold him back?
