That's gonna be tougher going further. With the increase of AI production an the closure of Crucial, prices and availability of chips are will be going in opposite directions and not in a good way.

Based on what I consider hearsay, it sounds like at least one of the AI bigshots has pre-ordered a bunch of memory which binds the supply chain
    even more.

I'm a little behind the curve, but I bought a system last year with 64
GB of DDR4 RAM. I hope that'll hold me for a while longer. It's only
2666mhz, I could probably upgrade to an 11th gen i7 and still use that
    memory.

Sadly, while prices ebb and flow, they never go back down all the way.

That's standard practice for any business when needing to keep an inventory of parts.

    I don't think it is SOP to pre-order a supplier's entire capacity for a
    set period.

It depends on what is being ordered. If it's a part that has to meet a certain
spec or a board that was "designed around that part" than yes, you'd want to
stockpile those parts. End of Life/Price changes & tarrifs are other issues
we have to plan for when doing manufacturing. Caps and resistors are not what
is stockpiled, but certain processors, and in our case, amplifiers are definetly
what we buy large quantities of and stick them up on a shelf until we need them.
Our board house will also buy/stock large quantities of common parts. I've
worked for an OEM for about 19 years now and currently handle a lot of the
ordering & inventory along with several other duties.
... Wanted: Programmers. Some assembly required.
